Festival of India 2009 : Inaugural Performances

Audiences were left truly awed when the inaugural performance of “Festival of India” allowed them the rare opportunity to witness the many faces of the vast subcontinent through music and dance.The Balai Kartini auditorium filled gradually to near-maximum capacity, as Indian Ambassador to Indonesia, Biren Nanda welcomed guests of various nationalities, most noticeably Indonesian and Indian.

“The Festival has been envisaged around the theme of ‘Friendship through Culture’. India and Indonesia have shared a long history of cultural links, and we hope that through the sharing and collaboration in the cultural events during the festival, we will be able to bring our peoples closer together,” he said.

The function also had presence of Ms. Aditi Mehta, Joint Secretary, Indira Gandhi National Centre for Arts, New Delhi, His Excellency the Ambassador of Indonesia to India Mr. Andi Ghalib, Secretary General Foreign Affairs, Mr. Imran Cotan, Ambassadors and other dignitaries of Indonesian government and society.

 The nine folk and classical troupes from every corner of India gave audiences much to savor with the energetic and proud display of their particular artistic traditions. The classical dance form of Kathak from North India bounced lightly against the heavy footfalls of the Karnatak Yakshagaan drama-demons, while the energetic Assamese Bihu harvest dance provided a surprising contrast to the melodious Northwestern Rajasthani folk music.

For many, this colorful and musical spectacle was a first. And from the cheers and standing ovation of the audience, the show is sure leave a lasting impression of India on those who experienced it last night, as well as those who will undoubtedly be drawn to witness the “Festival of India” as it progresses.

The troupes will perform again tonight at Usmar Ismail Hall at 6pm, after which they will visit six cities across Indonesia to further the spirit of and participation in the Festival
